Please don't think so terribly of this poor, misguided boy. After all, with power comes responsibility a shit load of problems. Beyond could have grown up into a normal man and had a good life, but this simply wasn't the case. This pretty psycho was only a victim of his own power. He is far, FAR from a cruel person. Just because he is a murderer does not mean he was doing anything wrong, in truth, outside of calling out to the man who he was made after. L. Everything in this man, in time, leads back to L.

Beyond went to the trouble on his own to make sure his victims were all destined to die on the days they did; he even drugged them to make sure they were nice and comfortable before he ended their lives. A cruel man would have made them truly suffer, but Beyond Birthday was not a cruel man. Creepy, eccentric, and a bit too curious, yes. But far from cruel. All of his hate and rage lie not with those he killed, but with the man he was modeled to be. That detective L, who wouldn't even reveal himself to those raised to be the next him. No, all the terrors done to those bodies were most likely post-mortem, or they were gone enough with the drugs that they had no idea they were even dying.

Now let's get into Beyond's real personality shall we? BB is a rather light-hearted guy. He likes a good time - hell, he even likes manga and anime. Now, he's a bit selfish, as I'm sure you have already guessed. Those books? He won't share if they are his. You'll have to get your own. But he will offer to share his food. He is always willing to share his treats, though most people wouldn't want jelly a creepy man's hands have been in. Still, he would offer, and make you diabetic sugar - I mean, coffee, as well.

On to L, This guy looks a hell of a lot like L, anyway. What should be stated first and foremost is that he also has all of L's mannerisms down pat. I would say, "As he was raised to be L's copy, B has deep but conflicting feelings of resentment and obsession toward the man. Much like a middle child trying to prove himself, he is driven to step out of L's shadow by surpassing him. He goes so far as to say, ""If L is a genius, B is an extreme genius. If L is a freak, B is an extreme freak." At the same time, he really wouldn't know what to do without L because of the way that he was raised. eats like him, sits like him, he even thinks a lot like the man. Though he may act a bit childish, he is actually quite the genius. No normal person could figure out the clues he leaves behind. No, Beyond Birthday is a very smart boy.

Beyond Birthday was born into a rather normal family - loving mother, hard working father - but what made this lovely family cursed was Beyond himself. The boy had been born both gifted and cursed. The Eyes of a Shinigami were blessed to his skull at birth. No deals, no half life. Just a lifetime of knowing when those you love will die. He would know people's names before they ever introduced themselves, and when they would die. It was no surprise to the young child the day his father didn't come home from work, mugged on the street. Or a while later, when his mother died in a train accident. These things happen, and you can't do shit when you see the numbers. It's already in your cards.

But the Quillish Wammy, well, he thought the boy's intelligence was useful if it was known of the eyes at the time. He was brought in as the second child of the Wammy house, next in line to take over for the great detective L. He was given the name B for Backup. It only seemed right with A being so very perfect. That was, until the other boy's suicide, which left Beyond in the spotlight. He started to bend and crack under the pressure. He was slowly becoming unstable and a danger to others, so in time, the second half of the first generation of Wammy kids ran away. Beyond had no intention of being the next L, hell no. Not when L would likely live most of his life anyway. No, Beyond had too much of an ego. He wanted to surpass L, to be better than the man, but not as a detective. He wanted to be the world's greatest criminal. They say you make your own worst enemy, and in this case, Watari made L's worst enemy next to Kira.

B had moved from England to America, and across to L.A. Maybe a bit predictable, but he did it nonetheless. It was in May of 2002 that L got a hint that this could possibly be where his successor had gone with the first of the "Wara Ningyo" or "Closed Room Murders." Three victims died before they ever got the information: Believed Bridesmaid, a man in his 40s, Quarter Queen, a 14-year-old girl found face down, and then Backyard Bottomslash, another, older victim - a woman this time, like Believe Bridesmaid, but facing up. Each room was locked from the inside and cleaned of all prints. He went as far as taking lights out of the sockets and cleaning the lightbulbs themselves, as well as the "Wara Ningyo": small, cheap Japanese curse dolls. Each victim had fewer. 4,3,2 and leading to 1, which leads us to where the story really begins.

Naomi Misora was a suspended FBI agent who was working as L's Eyes and Shield, just as BB had suspected someone would, while hiding under the bed of Believed Bridesmaid. He had heard her talking to L before making himself known to her a few moments later. He showed all the mannerisms of L from style of dress, to his sitting style, to the love of sugar, although he openly voiced a love of strawberry jam. Oh, did I forget to mention he introduced himself as the "unprivate detective, Rue Ryuzaki"? Eccentric? Yeah, just a bit. It's a Wammy quirk. Believing that Misora was very bright, he actually helped her out in her search around the house for clues that the killer might have left behind.

It took a little while, but this little lady had it! He was very impressed with her and insisted they work together to prevent the fourth murder that was sure to come. Working with the woman, he found himself more and more impressed with her even as she managed to get away from him when, disguised, he tried to attack her. But, sadly, he did underestimate the FBI Agent. I really hate to spoil the ending of the book, but, after many clues Misora finds herself racing towards room 404, yeah funny right? Was racing towards the room planning to stop this final murder or would you say suicide? Beyond Birthday had soaked himself in gasoline and was holding the match about to drop it as he heard her racing down the halls...
